Arduino Plug and Make Kit

Product Design, Art Direction

The Arduino Plug and Make Kit is a beginner-friendly hardware and software package that lets users build seven fun tech projects. It includes a microcontroller and seven plug-and-play Modulino® nodes, which are individual sensors and actuators. The kit aims to make learning intuitive and enjoyable. With easy connections, app integration, and cloud support, users can quickly innovate and experiment with DIY electronics.

During the development of the Plug and Make Kit, I was in charge of designing a base or platform that allows users to easily assemble the modular nodes included in the kit to create their projects. I also played an important role in creating the storyboard and filming the product release video.

Product Design

This kit provides value through its quick-to-connect, modular sensors and buttons, which played a key role in defining the form of the base. I kept the base as compact as possible to allow users to easily transport or place their assemblies wherever needed. Based on user research, users typically build projects using around 3–4 modular pieces, so I designed a grid system that accommodates up to 5 pieces comfortably on the base.

I experimented with two different materials and leg structures. We decided to go with PCB fiberglass over 3D-printed ABS, as it allowed us to add graphics for better contrast between the base and the electronic modules, and to display certification information on the back. Production and material costs were also important factors, influencing the choice of material and the decision to use spacer legs instead of a tilted platform.

Final Product

The finished Modulino base is made from the same fiberglass material used in electronic components. The platform has four distance spacers on the corners, allowing users to use the product as-is, screw it to another surface, or balance it on two legs for vertical use.

Art Direction

I was heavily involved in the creative process of developing the storyboard for the Plug and Make Kit’s product release video. I focused on building the narrative around four distinct target user groups and their use case scenarios. My goal was to help viewers empathize with these characters and envision themselves using the product. Another important consideration was structuring the video into four clear sections, one per user group, so that these could be clipped and repurposed as short-format videos for targeted follow-up campaigns. We worked with an agency to produce the video, and I served as art director during the two days of filming.
